1. Suffering and Trials May Lead the Wicked to Blasphemy:
Instead of seeking mercy and help from God, the wicked often resort to blasphemy during times of suffering.
This is why Satan thought that if God took everything away from Job, he would blaspheme, just like other wicked people do. Satan said to God:
“But now, stretch out Your hand and touch all that he has, and he will surely curse You to Your face!” (Job 1:11).
God left him only his tongue and his wife.
2. Religious Fanaticism Can Lead to Blasphemy:
• A lack of understanding of God’s will and misguided zeal, as St. Paul said:
“Although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.” (1 Timothy 1:13).
• Also, ignorance of God leads to blasphemy:
“The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable works; there is none who does good.” (Psalm 14:1).
• Some, despite knowing God’s word—whether priests, Pharisees, or scribes—blasphemed Christ while He was on the cross. Scripture says:
“And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, ‘You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross!’” (Matthew 27:39).
And in Mark:
“And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads and saying, ‘Aha! You who destroy the temple and build it in three days!’” (Mark 15:29).
• Even the thief (on the left), far from God’s commandments, blasphemed:
“Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, ‘If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us!’” (Luke 23:39).
• The actions of the Jews were a stumbling block to the Gentiles. As St. Paul said:
“For ‘the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you,’ as it is written.” (Romans 2:24).
The Jews separated themselves from others and despised the Gentiles and their worship, which led to the blaspheming of God’s name. They should have had open hearts and doors, not closed hearts and narrow gates.
3. Divine Plagues Cause People to Blaspheme God’s Name:
As St. John the Beloved writes:
“And men were scorched with great heat, and they blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; and they did not repent and give Him glory.
They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.” (Revelation 16:9, 11, 21).
4. Signs of the End Times Include Blasphemy:
• “But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy.” (2 Timothy 3:1–2).
• In Revelation, the beast persecuting the Church appears again:
“Then I stood on the sand of the sea. And I saw a beast rising up out of the sea… He was given a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies, and he was given authority to continue for forty-two months. Then he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme His name, His tabernacle, and those who dwell in heaven.” (Revelation 13:1–6).
• The new Babylon, symbolized by a woman, is full of blasphemous names:
“So he carried me away in the Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.” (Revelation 17:3).
5. Blasphemy Comes from a Defiled Heart Alongside Other Sins:
As Jesus said:
“What comes out of a man, that defiles a man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.” (Mark 7:20–23).
St. Isaac the Syrian said: “He who boasts of his purity falls into fornication, and he who prides himself on his knowledge and wisdom falls into blasphemy.”
6. Despite Receiving the Promised Land, Israel Worshipped Idols:
They even passed their children through fire and offered sacrifices to the nations. That’s why God said:
“Therefore, son of man, speak to the house of Israel and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD: In this too your fathers have blasphemed Me, by being unfaithful to Me.’” (Ezekiel 20:27–32).
7. Some People Complain Against God or Accuse Him of Injustice:
Some break their relationship with Him or stop praying.
Cursing religion is also a form of blasphemy.
(But through repentance, confession, and Communion, one can receive heavenly forgiveness and absolution.)
8. The Greedy Person Blasphemes:
As the Bible says:
“For the wicked boasts of his heart’s desire; he blesses the greedy and renounces the LORD.
The wicked in his proud countenance does not seek God; God is in none of his thoughts.” (Psalm 10:3–4).
9. Procrastination Leads to Hardness of Heart:
The Holy Spirit convicts sinners and awakens them to repent, but they delay. And each delay is followed by another, until repentance becomes difficult, or death comes without repentance.
Some even pretend to be repentant while their hearts remain unchanged and attached to sin. Eventually, they believe their own lies—when the heart deceives itself.
